Polokwane/Pietersburg

Polokwane is a vibrant and colourful city in a sea of grasslands surrounded by scenic mountains. It is home to many fascinating people and cultural diversity. It is the centre for local African culture where carefully preserved social traditions are displayed and tribal identity fiercely maintained. It is the “nerve centre” of regional economic development in Limpopo.

History of Limpopo:

Polokwane is the geographic and economic centre of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The city provides the administrative workforce for a province of industry and determination. The province is divided in four regions namely; the Capricorn region, the Bushveld region, the Soutpansberg region and the Valley of the Olifants.
The Limpopo Province is area of legend and romance that intrigues visitors with tales of ancient tribes and fearless pioneers who braved the unknown in the days of old. To this day the province is the home of the enigmatic Rain Queen who, according to legend, has the mystical power to make rain. Steeped in history, the Limpopo celebrates a rich cultural heritage and at many archaeological sites the mysteries of the past and ancient peoples are still being unearthed. The present tranquillity of the province belies a turbulent past, to which many monuments and museums attest.

Fishing in Limpopo
Fishing in the Limpopo Province is a popular attraction amongst locals and tourists alike. The Limpopo river is one of the most popular destinations amongst anglers and an impressive catch is the order of the day in this river that is also known for its flourishing crocodile population. However do not neglect the fishing opportunities of the Olifants River in the Lowveld, the Levubu and Mutale Rivers in the Venda area and the Letaba River to the east of the Kruger National Park. Bream, tilapia, barbell, yellowfish and triggerfish are among the species that can be lured to the hooks of keen anglers.

Civic Plaza & Square
Lovely landscaped gardens with walkways, streams and ponds provide the perfect setting for the Civic Plaza. The Art Museum in the Library Gardens houses an impressive art collection. The restored Dutch Reformed Church houses the Hugh Exton Collection which comprises 22,000 glass negatives and many photographs of great historical value.

Louis Trichardt
Named after a Voortrekker leader, this historic town serves a thriving farming community. Vast cattle and game ranches occur in the area, and citrus, subtropical fruit, nuts and vegetables are produced on a large scale. Hunting and photographic safaris are available on private ranches in the area. With its many hotels, game lodges, resorts and a private nature reserve, the district is a tourist's paradise.

Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa. The park has 8 main gates that allow entrance to the different camps. All Big Five game animals are found at Kruger National Park, which has more species of mammals than any other African Game Reserve(at 147 species). The Kruger National Park has 21 rest camps, as well as 7 private lodge concessions, and 11 designated private safari lodges.
